Jubilee Aspirants Question Process Behind Matiang’i’s Emergence as 2027 Flagbearer

A section of aspirants within the Jubilee Party has demanded transparency over how former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i reportedly emerged as the party’s 2027 presidential flagbearer.

The group, associated with former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu, is now calling on retired President Uhuru Kenyatta to publicly clarify the party’s official position.

Speaking during a consultative meeting with grassroots leaders, the aspirants claimed they were surprised by reports suggesting that Matiang’i had already been endorsed as Jubilee’s preferred presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 General Election.

While acknowledging Matiang’i’s record in public service, they questioned the process that led to his apparent endorsement. According to them, Jubilee must demonstrate internal democracy and allow open competition if it hopes to rebuild trust and strengthen its support base.

“We cannot preach democracy nationally and ignore it within our own house,” one of the leaders stated, adding that aspirants contesting various seats require clear direction on the party’s strategy.

The group also raised concerns about possible coalition agreements and zoning arrangements, arguing that early communication from the party leadership would prevent confusion and unnecessary internal disputes.

Their demands come at a time when political realignments are slowly taking shape across the country as parties position themselves for the next General Election.

Jubilee, which has been undergoing restructuring following the 2022 polls, is seeking to regain influence in both Parliament and county governments.

Attention now turns to Uhuru Kenyatta, who remains Jubilee’s party leader. His response is expected to shape whether the party moves into the 2027 race united or faces renewed internal tensions.
