Heavy Rains Cause Devastation Across Kenya

Relentless rains continue to wreak havoc across Kenya, leaving a humanitarian crisis in their wake. Makueni County has been among the hardest hit, with at least nine people confirmed dead as rescue teams struggle to reach families stranded by rising waters.

Residents in affected areas have been cut off for days, lacking access to food, clean water, and medical care. The Kenya Red Cross Society, alongside local volunteers and security personnel, has intensified evacuation operations using boats, trucks, and emergency vehicles.

Temporary shelters in schools, churches, and community halls are housing displaced individuals, though overcrowding and limited resources continue to hamper relief efforts.

Urban centres, including Nairobi and Kisumu, have also suffered severe flooding. Overwhelmed drainage systems have submerged streets and homes, causing losses to households and small businesses alike. Economic disruption adds to the hardships faced by affected communities.

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned that the heavy rainfall is part of a prolonged wet season, cautioning residents about potential landslides in hilly areas and possible damage to roads and bridges.

President William Ruto has assured citizens that the government is ramping up emergency response efforts, deploying additional resources and coordinating with county administrations. He urged residents to follow evacuation orders to prevent further casualties.

Humanitarian agencies are appealing urgently for food, clean water, and medical supplies, as thousands of affected families face a difficult recovery. The situation highlights the need for sustained support from both national and international partners.
