Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and his United Opposition allies may face fresh political pressure after new poll details indicated that a vocal United Democratic Alliance (UDA) legislator has taken an early lead in the Mt Kenya region.
The development comes amid Gachagua’s continued assertion that he remains the political kingpin of the region following his fallout with President William Ruto.
According to a survey by Mizani Africa, Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba is currently the most preferred candidate in Githunguri Constituency ahead of the August 2027 General Election.
The poll shows Wamuchomba leading with 43.9% support, while her closest competitor, Hon. Kago wa Lydia, trails at 18.6%.
The findings suggest that UDA retains significant support in parts of Mt Kenya, a region widely considered crucial in the upcoming 2027 political contest.
Political observers argue that the early numbers could complicate Gachagua’s efforts to consolidate regional support under his emerging political outfit.
However, analysts also note that with more than a year before the General Election, political dynamics could still shift significantly.
As campaigns gradually take shape, Mt Kenya is once again positioning itself as a key battleground that could influence the national political equation in 2027.
