Gachagua Resumes Meru Tour After Convoy Blockage, Hints at Backing Kalonzo for 2027 Presidency

Rigathi Gachagua, the leader of the DCP party, on Saturday resumed his political tour of Meru County amid heightened political tension, just a day after his convoy was reportedly blocked while heading to a rally in Meru Town.

Gachagua led several opposition leaders on the second day of their Meru tour, this time travelling to Tigania East where supporters had gathered awaiting his arrival.

When the opposition convoy stopped at Mikinduri, hundreds of residents turned up to welcome the leaders, creating a charged political atmosphere as chants and slogans filled the busy trading centre.

Addressing the crowd, Gachagua urged residents to elect leaders solely from the DCP party. He warned them against supporting politicians allied to President William Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.

The former Deputy President also revisited the dramatic events of Friday, alleging that government-sponsored youths had been mobilised to disrupt his rally in Meru Town.

According to Gachagua, the incident was intended to intimidate the opposition and prevent them from reaching the public.

However, he praised supporters who still attended in large numbers, saying their presence demonstrated that threats and violence would not silence their movement.

In remarks that appeared to signal the beginning of the opposition’s political mobilisation ahead of the next polls, Gachagua hinted at preparations for the 2027 Kenyan General Election.

He suggested that the opposition could rally behind Kalonzo Musyoka, the leader of the Wiper party, as a possible presidential candidate.

Gachagua praised Kalonzo for standing by him during his impeachment, stating that the opposition is determined to intensify its political mobilisation across the country ahead of the 2027 contest.
