Kithure Kindiki delivered a strong response to criticism from his predecessor Rigathi Gachagua during a public event in Meru County, highlighting his record in government while urging respect for the Office of the Deputy President.
Speaking to residents, Kindiki said leadership should be guided by dignity and responsibility, warning that constant political attacks directed at the office undermine the respect expected of national leadership positions.
The Deputy President used the occasion to defend his performance in government, stating that his track record in public service speaks for itself.
According to Kindiki, his experience in leadership and public service roles is broader compared to that of Gachagua.
He pointed out that Gachagua served only one term as a Member of Parliament before rising to the position of Deputy President, contrasting that with what he described as his own years of service in various government and leadership roles.
In remarks that drew cheers from some members of the crowd, Kindiki also referenced the events that led to Gachagua’s impeachment, suggesting that the former Deputy President should focus on constructive engagement rather than attacking those currently serving in government.
“Respect the office and allow those currently serving to do their work,” Kindiki told residents.
The exchange comes amid an increasingly heated political climate in the Mount Kenya region, where rival factions have continued trading accusations over leadership, development priorities, and political influence.
Analysts say the ongoing rivalry between the two leaders reflects deeper political realignments as figures in the region position themselves ahead of future political contests.
Despite the sharp remarks, Kindiki maintained that the government remains focused on delivering development projects and improving the livelihoods of citizens across the country.
He urged leaders to prioritize service to the people instead of engaging in divisive politics.
The Deputy President concluded by calling for unity among leaders in the region, stressing that political differences should not distract from the responsibility of serving Kenyans.
However, observers say the latest public rebuttal could further intensify the political contest between Kindiki and Gachagua in the coming months.
