The ongoing war of words between former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and outspoken lawyer Miguna Miguna has escalated from social media exchanges to the courtroom, with the High Court issuing a temporary gag order against Sonko.
In a significant legal development, Justice Janet Mulwa of the Milimani High Court certified Miguna’s application as urgent and granted interim orders barring Sonko, his agents, or anyone acting on his behalf from publishing or sharing any defamatory, scandalous, or malicious content about Miguna across all media platforms, including Facebook, X, and YouTube.
The court further warned that failure to comply with the directive would attract penal consequences. The case is now set to proceed with further directions from the court.
The legal battle stems from a heated online exchange that has been unfolding for weeks. According to court documents, the dispute intensified after Miguna questioned the source of Sonko’s wealth following his public display of large sums of cash.
In response, Sonko allegedly made a series of controversial claims about Miguna, including accusations regarding his past, which Miguna’s legal team has described as malicious and defamatory. They argue that the remarks caused emotional distress to his family and damaged his professional reputation.
Miguna is also seeking the immediate removal of the alleged defamatory content from social media platforms as part of the ongoing case.
Interestingly, Sonko’s latest social media post, made shortly before the court ruling, did not address the legal dispute.
Instead, it focused on his philanthropic activities and encouraged parents to guide their children on avoiding toxic relationships, a stark contrast to the escalating legal confrontation.
As the case moves forward, it highlights the increasing role of the courts in regulating online conduct and underscores that social media disputes can carry serious legal consequences.
