Breaking News: Shock as ODM Postpones Key Delegate Elections in Kisumu Over Security Concerns

The Orange Democratic Movement has postponed the planned election of party delegates in Kisumu County, which had been scheduled to take place on Friday, March 6, 2026.
The decision was announced by Oburu Oginga, who issued a directive cancelling the exercise.

In a letter dated March 6, 2026, Oburu instructed the chairperson of the ODM National Elections Coordination Committee to halt the planned polls.

According to the communication, the postponement was due to what the party described as a “prevailing polarized environment informed by intelligence.”

This suggests that the political atmosphere in the region has become highly divided, raising fears that the elections could trigger tension or unrest.

Security intelligence reports allegedly indicated that the situation on the ground was tense, with party leaders concerned that proceeding with the vote could lead to clashes among supporters or rival groups within the party.

The Orange Democratic Movement is one of the most influential political parties in the region, especially in Kisumu and the wider Nyanza Region. Delegates play a crucial role in the party structure, as they help elect officials and influence key decisions ahead of future elections.

Many party members had already prepared to participate in the voting exercise, hoping to choose their representatives. However, the sudden announcement has left some supporters disappointed while others welcomed the move, saying it could help prevent potential conflicts.

Oburu Oginga, who also serves as the Senator for Siaya County and is the elder brother of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, said the decision was made to safeguard peace and stability during the sensitive political period.

Party officials are expected to notify all ODM branches and members about the postponement. So far, no new date has been announced for the delegate elections.

The party leadership has indicated that the process will only resume once the political environment becomes calm and safe for members to participate freely.

The development highlights the delicate nature of internal party politics, even in regions considered strongholds.

ODM supporters now hope that tensions will ease soon so that the delegate selection process can continue in a peaceful and transparent manner.
