Atandi Criticises Orengo as Political Tensions Rise in Siaya

A political rift is emerging in Siaya County after Alego Usonga MP Sam Atandi launched a sharp attack on Governor James Orengo over his leadership and political direction ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Leadership Criticism

Speaking during a public gathering in Yala, Atandi accused Orengo of underperformance, claiming the county government has failed to improve the living standards of residents.

He urged voters to consider new leadership, arguing that Siaya needs a fresh approach to governance and development.

Health Sector Concerns

Atandi pointed to ongoing challenges in the health sector, citing a nurses’ strike in Siaya Town as evidence of poor management. He said the situation has disrupted healthcare services and negatively affected residents.

The MP added that he had raised the matter with President William Ruto, blaming local leadership for the crisis and calling for urgent intervention.

Political Alignments Questioned

Beyond governance, Atandi also criticised Orengo’s political alignment, particularly his perceived association with opposition figures linked to Rigathi Gachagua of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP).

He dismissed that stance and reaffirmed his support, alongside other regional leaders, for the broad-based government.

Growing Political Divisions

The remarks come amid speculation about divisions in Siaya’s political landscape, especially following Orengo’s absence from a recent high-profile rally attended by leaders such as Gladys Wanga and Junet Mohamed.

The exchange highlights intensifying political competition in the region, with leaders positioning themselves as alliances begin to shift ahead of the 2027 elections.
