ACK Bishop Urges Nyanza Leaders to End Insults and Embrace Unity During Church Service Attended by Ruto

A bishop presiding over a church service at the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) in Bondo on Sunday called for unity and restraint among leaders and residents of the Nyanza region, warning that public insults and political hostility were eroding the dignity of the community.

The service, attended by William Ruto and several senior government officials, took place at a time when the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is experiencing internal divisions over its stance towards the Kenya Kwanza administration.

Addressing the congregation, the bishop expressed concern over the growing trend of leaders publicly attacking one another, saying the culture of insults was damaging the reputation of the region and undermining efforts to promote unity and development.

“I am not happy seeing our people insulting each other in public forums. Such behavior lowers our dignity as a community. Leaders must remember that the people are watching and learning from them,” the bishop said.

He urged political leaders from the Nyanza region to exercise maturity and prioritize unity, especially during a period when the ODM party appears to be split into two camps.

One faction has shown willingness to work with President Ruto’s government, while another group has remained firmly opposed to the administration.

According to the cleric, political differences should not translate into hostility among leaders and supporters, emphasizing that respectful dialogue is essential for maintaining peace and cohesion within the region.

“We may differ politically, but we must never forget that we belong to one community. Walking together as one people is what will bring progress,” he added.

The remarks come amid rising political tensions in ODM strongholds, with leaders publicly expressing contrasting views on whether the party should cooperate with the national government.

President Ruto, who was present during the service, has in recent months intensified his engagements in Nyanza, a region traditionally considered an ODM political stronghold, as he seeks to broaden his political support across the country.
