Tension in Kisii as Police Disperse Students Attempting to Block United Opposition Convoy

Police officers in Kisii on Monday dispersed a group of students from Kisii National Polytechnic who reportedly attempted to block a convoy belonging to the United Opposition at Daraja Moja as it headed toward Kisii town.

The incident occurred on the same day an opposition rally was scheduled in the area, heightening tension within parts of the town.

What Happened

According to eyewitnesses, the students gathered along the roadside and allegedly tried to obstruct the movement of the convoy. Police officers were swiftly deployed to the scene and intervened to clear the road, pushing back the group to allow the vehicles to pass.

It was not immediately clear whether any injuries or arrests were recorded following the confrontation. By the time of publication, authorities had not released an official statement detailing the events.

Earlier Disruption Reported

The disruption came just hours after a separate group of individuals reportedly attempted to interfere with the opposition rally earlier in the day. While details surrounding that incident remain limited, sources indicated that there were attempts to interrupt proceedings before the rally progressed.

Security personnel were later seen maintaining a heavy presence in strategic parts of Kisii town to prevent further disturbances and to ensure calm prevailed as the convoy moved through the area.

Motive Unclear

The motive behind the students’ reported attempt to block the convoy has not been officially established.

The United Opposition had scheduled activities in Kisii as part of its broader political engagements in the region, with organizers earlier indicating that the rally would bring together supporters and local leaders.

Photos taken at the scene showed police officers confronting the group near Daraja Moja as tensions unfolded, before the situation was eventually brought under control.
