ODM MP and National Assembly Minority Leader Junet Mohammed has publicly pointed fingers at former President Uhuru Kenyatta for the ongoing leadership troubles within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
Speaking in Lamu, Junet stated,
"The problem we have in the ODM party is Uhuru Kenyatta. He is the one destroying our party, not William Ruto,"
placing the blame for internal conflicts on Uhuru rather than President William Ruto.
His remarks come in the wake of accusations by Siaya Governor James Orengo, who alleged that President Ruto has been interfering in ODM’s internal affairs.
Orengo claimed that the President had convened meetings of party organs while sidelining key officials, including Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and senior party member Otsotsi.
"The problem in ODM is President William Ruto and we are asking him to let ODM go. He has not taken it hostage; he is in possession of it," Orengo said, adding that the party would continue implementing reforms through its political structures.
The statements coincide with ODM’s formal decision to exit the Azimio coalition. During a National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Mombasa, ODM leader Oburu Oginga described recent changes implemented by former President Uhuru Kenyatta as intrusive, stressing that coalition decisions cannot be made without ODM’s consultation.
Although the party has effectively left the coalition, Oburu noted that the official exit process is still ongoing. Party leaders reaffirmed their commitment to using ODM as the primary platform for political reforms, underscoring its independence and influence within the Azimio coalition.
The internal disputes follow actions by Azimio chairperson Uhuru Kenyatta, who recently appointed Kalonzo Musyoka as the coalition’s party leader, further intensifying tensions within ODM.
