A major shake-up is underway within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) following a high-stakes National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Mombasa on Wednesday morning.
Chaired by party leader Oburu Oginga, the session saw decisive action against members who have opposed ODM’s growing engagement with the current administration, signaling a tightening of ranks ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Leaders Removed from NEC
The most notable outcome of the meeting was the removal of Saboti MP Caleb Amisi, Taita Taveta Senator Johnes Mwaruma, and former councillor Kipkorir Menjo from the party’s top decision-making organ.
These leaders had been openly critical of the party’s warming relations with the national government, a stance that appears to have cost them their seats.
Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna, who had been under speculation due to his independent streak, survived the purge. His continued presence suggests a strategic balancing act by ODM leadership to maintain some internal cohesion while consolidating power.
Consolidation Ahead of 2027
The purge underscores ODM’s determination to unify its leadership as it navigates potential alliances ahead of the next general elections.
By removing dissenting voices, Oburu Oginga is sending a clear message that defiance against the party’s strategic direction will not be tolerated.
Political analysts view the move as a signal that ODM is positioning itself for coalition negotiations, ensuring that its leadership team aligns closely with the party’s vision and tactical goals.
The reshuffle is likely to influence internal party dynamics and could affect how ODM negotiates with other political formations ahead of 2027.
