In a special recognition of courage and dedication, the National Police Service (NPS) has promoted Winfred Gacheri Kinoti from the rank of Constable to Corporal after nearly two decades of service.
Corporal Kinoti has served in the police force for 18 years, spending the last three years stationed in Mukogodo Forest, a region along the Laikipia County–Isiolo border that has experienced insecurity linked to banditry. During that time, she was the only female officer deployed in the forest.
Promotion Ceremony in Nanyuki
The promotion was presided over by Inspector-General Douglas Kanja and Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen during a security and citizen service assessment forum held in Nanyuki, Laikipia County.
Speaking at the event, Murkomen praised Corporal Kinoti’s resilience, noting that serving in a high-risk area as the only woman officer required exceptional bravery and dedication.
He emphasized that officers working under extreme conditions deserve recognition and institutional support.
Role as a Corporal
With the promotion, Kinoti transitions from an entry-level Constable position to a supervisory role. Corporals within the NPS oversee constables and assist in coordinating station-level operations, playing a key part in day-to-day security management.
Ongoing Security Efforts
The government recently launched a multi-agency, intelligence-led security operation in Mukogodo Forest aimed at restoring peace following isolated cases of banditry. The initiative involves collaboration between various security agencies.
Authorities have also pledged to rehabilitate key access roads and expand mobile network coverage in the region to improve response times and strengthen coordination.
Kinoti’s advancement reflects growing recognition of women serving on the frontlines of Kenya’s security efforts and highlights the broader push to enhance safety in vulnerable areas.
