Kiunjuri Dismisses ODM Call on Ruto’s 2027 Running Mate, Endorses Mt Kenya Claim

Laikipia East Mwangi Kiunjuri has dismissed calls by Oburu Odinga for the Orange Democratic Movement to influence President William Ruto’s choice of running mate in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking on Kameme TV on Monday, Kiunjuri insisted that the Mt Kenya region is likely to retain the deputy presidency due to its voting strength, emphasizing that past decisions, including Ruto’s 2022 running mate selection, followed similar regional logic.

“Those are politics. The position of the Mount Kenya region was given to the Mount Kenya region because of the votes we shall give to William Ruto,” Kiunjuri said. He added, “To be given the position of deputy region, the principle of shareholding must be considered. What are you bringing to the table?”

Kiunjuri’s remarks come amid continued advocacy from Mt Kenya leaders, including Embu Governor Cecily Mbarire, who argue that Deputy President Kithure Kindiki embodies the region’s stake in government and should remain in office.

Meanwhile, Oburu remains steadfast in pushing ODM’s demands, leading a faction open to negotiations with Ruto, while Secretary General Edwin Sifuna’s group advocates for ODM to field its own presidential candidate.

This disagreement highlights the growing regional and party tensions shaping Kenya’s political landscape as the 2027 elections approach.
