Katiba Institute Demands Transparency from Nairobi County over National Government Deal

Pressure is building on Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja after Katiba Institute, a lobby group, demanded full disclosure on a reported deal between Nairobi County and the national government.

The institute has formally written to the Acting County Secretary, requesting detailed information on the arrangement. The group wants clarity on whether key county functions are being transferred and under what legal framework, giving the county 21 days to respond.

The demand comes just hours before a planned signing ceremony between the county and national government, set for Tuesday afternoon. Reports suggest that several major services could be affected under the new partnership.

Katiba Institute emphasized that the public has the right to know how county responsibilities are managed. They are seeking answers on:

Whether the agreement already exists and when it started or will take effect

The legal basis for the arrangement

The involvement of the County Assembly, including any communications between the executive and the assembly regarding the transfer of roles

The group raised concerns about transparency, accountability, and respect for devolution, arguing that residents and stakeholders must be informed of decisions affecting county governance.

Uncertainty has surrounded Nairobi County since the collaboration was reported. Details of the agreement remain undisclosed, sparking debate among residents and political leaders alike.

The coming weeks will likely determine whether the county government complies with the disclosure request and how the agreement, if any, will be implemented.
