Kakamega Rally Turns Deadly, Gachagua Condemns Exploitation of Youth

KAKAMEGA — A political rally led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna at Amalemba Grounds in Kakamega turned deadly on Friday, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

The violence erupted when a group of young men, allegedly ferried from Kisumu, attempted to disrupt the proceedings.

Opposition Chief Rigathi Gachagua condemned the incident, describing it as “another sad chapter for the country.”

He accused rogue government officials of using handouts to entice vulnerable youth into dangerous tasks under the cover of police protection.

“He left his home for a few coins and will go back in a casket,” Gachagua said, urging the government to focus on sustainable job creation rather than exploiting poverty for political gain. He stressed that no political rally is worth the loss of a human life.

The incident underscores growing tensions in Kenyan politics and the dangers of weaponizing youth during political events.

Authorities have called for calm, while opposition leaders warn that political gatherings must prioritize peaceful engagement and citizen safety.
