Breaking: Governor Simba Arati’s Office Torched Hours After Matiang’i’s Gusii Tour

Governor Simba Arati's office has been set ablaze at Gusii Stadium in Kisii today, causing minor damage to the office carpet.

Local media, including Etaya TV, reported that the fire started shortly after former Interior CS Dr. Fred Matiang’i visited the area.

The origin of the fire remains unclear, but it happened amid rising political tensions in the county.

Supporters of Governor Arati reportedly tried to block Matiang’i from entering the stadium for a United Opposition rally. Eyewitnesses said locals overpowered alleged goons linked to the governor and removed the office carpet. They laid it at the stadium entrance for Matiang’i and other opposition leaders as a symbolic gesture of defiance.

Reports indicate violence erupted in Kisii town, with hired goons allegedly terrorizing residents to disrupt the opposition event.

Some injured individuals were rushed to Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital. There are unconfirmed claims of fatalities among those attempting to stop the rally.

Governor Arati had previously stated that no rallies would be allowed in Kisii CBD. He said Gusii Stadium would remain closed and dismissed Matiang’i as having no authority in the county.

Critics have accused Arati of misusing county funds and using goons to intimidate opposition figures. Senator Richard Onyonka has openly criticized these alleged abuses.

Arati’s offices were also raided by the General Service Unit in 2023, though no direct link to today’s fire has been established.

Despite the disruptions, Matiang’i’s arrival drew large crowds. He addressed supporters, criticizing the government and positioning himself as a key opposition leader ahead of the 2027 elections.

His growing influence has reportedly alarmed Arati’s camp, with reports of secret meetings to counter him.

Local authorities have not issued an official statement on the vandalism or fire. Etaya TV highlighted the uncertainty over who started it but suggested political motives might be involved.

Residents are calling for calm as investigations begin, reflecting fears of further unrest in Kisii’s politically charged environment.
