Kiprotich Cherargei has criticised the Elgeyo-Marakwet County leadership over an audit query involving millions of shillings allegedly spent on biological assets.
The senator stated that in the Elgeyo-Marakwet County Executive FY 2024/25 financial statements, the Office of the Auditor General (OAG) raised concerns regarding biological assets listed under Note 30.
These assets were defined as seeds and breed of stock, including semen and artificial insemination, amounting to Ksh 274,642,715.
According to Cherargei, when the Governor appeared before the Senate Public Accounts Committee (CPAC) to respond to audit queries, he was unable to clearly explain the utilisation of the funds, identify beneficiary farmers, or justify the expenditure.
Cherargei, who is a member of the Senate Public Accounts Committee, noted that the committee reviews audit reports for all 47 county governments and makes recommendations based on the findings.
These recommendations are then adopted by the Senate and forwarded to investigative agencies such as the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) where necessary.
The senator further revealed that he intends to share audit findings from other counties in the coming days, including Nandi County under Governor Sang’s administration.
