Babu Owino, the Embakasi East Member of Parliament, has strongly criticized the suspension of Anthony Kibagendi, terming the decision arbitrary and politically driven.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Owino described the charges facing Kibagendi as “trumped up, frivolous, vexatious and limping,” arguing that suspending the legislator undermines the democratic will of the people of Kitutu Chache South.
“We strongly condemn the arbitrary suspension of Hon. Anthony Kibagendi, MP Kitutu Chache South, from Parliament,” Owino stated. “We demand the immediate and unconditional reinstatement of this hardworking MP. He was elected to represent his people in Parliament.”
Kibagendi has been among outspoken members of the Orange Democratic Movement who have publicly opposed what some leaders perceive as the party’s warming relations with President William Ruto’s administration.
Growing Rift Within ODM
The internal disagreements within ODM have intensified in recent months, with a faction of leaders insisting that the party should maintain its firm opposition stance against the Kenya Kwanza government.
Other prominent ODM figures who have echoed similar sentiments include:
Edwin Sifuna, Nairobi Senator
James Orengo, Siaya Governor
Babu Owino himself
The group maintains that the party must honor its pre-election commitments and avoid compromising its opposition identity.
Political Implications
Political analysts suggest Kibagendi’s suspension could further expose underlying divisions within ODM, particularly at a time when the party faces strategic decisions about its role in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
Supporters of the Kitutu Chache South MP argue that internal disciplinary processes should not be weaponized to suppress dissenting voices within the party.
As pressure builds, attention now turns to the ODM leadership on whether it will reconsider the suspension and initiate internal dialogue aimed at preserving party unity.
