A tragic incident occurred along the Kisumu-Busia highway, leaving one police officer dead after being struck by a speeding truck.
The accident happened at Asikote area in Luanda, Vihiga County, where police officers had set up a lawful roadblock to monitor traffic.
The deceased, Constable Michaels Yeko, was attached to Embali Police Station and was on duty conducting the operation under the supervision of a Sergeant.
According to police reports, the roadblock was properly set up with visible stop signs placed on both sides of the highway. Around the early morning hours, a Mercedes Benz Actros truck was traveling from Kisumu towards Busia.
Constable Yeko flagged down the driver, identified as Farah Adan, to stop for inspection.
However, the driver allegedly ignored the signal, sped through the barrier, and violently hit the officer. Yeko sustained severe injuries to his back and abdomen and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police officers quickly responded, securing the area and marking it for further investigation. The body of the fallen officer was moved to the mortuary, awaiting a postmortem examination.
Meanwhile, the truck was impounded at the local police station for inspection, and the driver was arrested and placed in custody, pending arraignment in court.
This incident has raised concerns about road safety and adherence to traffic regulations, especially near roadblocks. Authorities have urged drivers to follow traffic rules and remain vigilant to prevent further tragedies.
Constable Yeko’s death is a grim reminder of the risks police officers face while on duty. The police department has promised to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that justice is served.
The community and fellow officers continue to mourn the loss of Constable Yeko, remembering his dedication to keeping the roads safe.
