A Nairobi teacher has been taken to court following allegations that she assaulted a nine-year-old girl before later attacking the child’s mother in an incident that occurred in Dandora Phase 5, Embakasi Sub-County.
According to court records, the incident happened on January 10 after children were playing outside when the young girl, identified as M.N., accidentally hurt the teacher’s child.
The teacher, Terresia Wanjiru, aged 36, is accused of reacting angrily and allegedly beating the minor, leaving her with visible injuries.
Later that day, the child’s mother returned from work and found her daughter in distress, crying and showing signs of physical harm. She reportedly went to Wanjiru’s home to seek answers, but the situation quickly escalated.
Court documents indicate that the confrontation turned violent, with Wanjiru allegedly attacking the mother and inflicting injuries that required medical treatment.
The matter was reported to the authorities, leading to Wanjiru’s arrest and arraignment in court. Through her lawyer, Wanjiru asked for lenient bond terms, citing her responsibility as a single mother raising three children.
The court granted her a cash bail of Sh20,000, and the case is scheduled for mention on July 10.
The incident has sparked renewed debate on child protection and the conduct expected of teachers both within and outside school environments.
Child rights activists have called for stricter enforcement of laws protecting minors, stressing that educators must uphold the highest standards of behavior.
As investigations continue, the case has highlighted growing concerns about violence involving children and the urgent need to safeguard their welfare in communities and learning spaces.
