Retired Chief Justice and 2027 presidential hopeful David Maraga has unveiled a nationwide civic education campaign following the successful raising of KSh7.7 million in public donations.
The initiative, dubbed Ukatiba Caravan, was announced in the early hours of Thursday, January 29, 2026, through Maraga’s official X account. He disclosed that a total of KSh7,745,788.04 had been raised from 1,834 supporters, with the Kenyan diaspora contributing more than KSh6 million.
Maraga expressed gratitude to contributors, noting that the overwhelming support—particularly from Kenyans living abroad—had significantly strengthened the campaign’s capacity.
“In the spirit of transparent and accountable fundraising, we are embarking on the #UkatibaCaravan, a countrywide civic education programme aimed at increasing voter registration among young people,” Maraga said.
Targeting 15 Million Gen Z Voters
The civic education drive seeks to mobilise and register 15 million Gen Z voters under the #GenZ15MillionStrong movement ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The caravan will crisscross the country, holding town halls, workshops, and community outreach forums designed to educate citizens on constitutional values, civic responsibility, and the importance of active participation in the democratic process.
Maraga also urged Kenyans to continue supporting the initiative through multiple fundraising platforms, including M-Pesa, credit cards, PayPal, and Stripe.
Inspired by Gen Z Protests
The former Chief Justice has previously stated that the 2024 Gen Z protests were a major turning point that motivated him to enter elective politics.
In a past interview, Maraga described the handling of the demonstrations as a national wake-up call, condemning the use of excessive force against young protesters who had raised concerns over the Finance Bill.
“What I saw shocked me—young people being treated brutally. That moment forced me to ask what more I could do for this country,” he said.
Maraga’s campaign continues to position civic education, youth empowerment, and constitutionalism as central pillars of his presidential bid.
