Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka has joined opposition leaders demanding the immediate release of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who is alleged to have been abducted in Othaya, Nyeri County.
The claims, which began circulating on Tuesday, have sparked political tension and raised questions about security and the rule of law in Kenya.
Speaking to the media, Kalonzo described the alleged incident as “deeply troubling” and unacceptable in a democratic society. He called on security agencies to act swiftly and transparently to clarify Gachagua’s whereabouts and ensure his safety.
“Any form of enforced disappearance or extrajudicial action undermines constitutional freedoms and erodes public trust in state institutions,” Kalonzo warned.
Other opposition leaders echoed Kalonzo’s concerns, insisting that no Kenyan, regardless of political affiliation, should be subjected to unlawful detention or intimidation.
They urged the Inspector General of Police and the Ministry of Interior to issue an immediate statement addressing the allegations and detailing steps being taken to investigate.
According to opposition figures, the reported abduction has heightened anxiety among Gachagua’s supporters and residents of Nyeri County. While calls for calm continue, pressure on authorities to act remains high.
Some leaders have framed the incident as part of a broader pattern of political harassment, a claim the government has previously denied in similar cases. By Wednesday evening, there was still no official confirmation of an abduction, with authorities yet to provide a detailed response.
Opposition leaders warned that continued silence from state agencies only fuels speculation and fear. They stressed that the protection of human rights and adherence to the rule of law must remain a top priority, noting that the nation is closely watching how authorities handle the allegations.
