Hillary Kimutai Tonui, an accountant from Kericho, has fulfilled a lifelong promise to his parents by gifting them a beautiful home — one they initially thought was built for him.
Growing up, Hillary watched his peasant farmer parents toil tirelessly to provide for the family. Inspired by their sacrifices, he vowed to give back in a meaningful way.
"The hard work exhibited by my parents, persevering in the scorching sun on their farms, taking their lunch there, and enduring rainy afternoons just to make a life for us, motivated me immensely. I promised to build them a beautiful home as appreciation for their sacrifices," he told TUKO.co.ke.
Building the Home in Secret
In 2023, Hillary began construction of the new house but kept the true purpose a secret. His parents believed he was building it for himself.
Halfway through, Hillary and his wife moved to the United States, but he continued overseeing the project to ensure it would be perfect for his parents.
"In late May, I completed all modern installations, and all that remained was furnishing the house. Throughout, my parents and the village thought it was mine," he said.

The Big Reveal
Hillary organized a housewarming ceremony on December 12, 2025, inviting family, friends, and community members. On the day, everyone believed they were celebrating Hillary’s new home — until he announced the stunning house actually belonged to his parents.
Tears of joy flowed as the couple realized the house was theirs. Friends, relatives, and neighbors were equally amazed by the gesture.
"They couldn't believe such a well-furnished, beautifully designed house was theirs. Dances, songs, and praise filled the air, and speaker after speaker admitted being in disbelief," Hillary shared.
Continuing Support
Although Hillary now resides in the United States, he promises to continue supporting his parents while cherishing the joy of fulfilling his dream of appreciating their sacrifices.
Hillary’s story is reminiscent of other inspiring acts, such as Ronald Kimutai in Elgeyo Marakwet, who also delighted his entire village by building a stunning home for his parents.
