Kiambu Residents Demonstrate Over Construction They Say Defies Court and County Orders

Tension rose in Mwihoko Ward, Kahawa Sukari area of Kiambu County after residents staged a protest against a construction project they claim is being carried out illegally despite court and county directives stopping the works.

The demonstration took place on Sunday, December 28, after residents accused a private developer of continuing construction during the festive season, allegedly taking advantage of reduced enforcement and public offices being on holiday.

According to the residents, the disputed project involves the development of multi-storey rental apartments within a gated estate that is zoned strictly for single-family residential use.

They argue that the construction violates zoning regulations and the special conditions outlined in their lease agreements, which permit only one private residence per plot, excluding guest houses.

The protesters claimed that they had previously sought legal intervention and obtained court orders halting the project.

In addition, they said they had petitioned both the Kiambu County Government and the National Construction Authority (NCA), prompting a stop order that was reportedly issued in October 2024.

Despite these measures, residents allege that construction activities have continued uninterrupted.

Some expressed frustration, saying the developer had deployed workers to the site during the holidays to quietly advance the project in defiance of the orders.

Residents also raised safety concerns, warning that the building lacks approved plans and could pose structural risks to neighboring homes.

They argued that the development threatens not only the character of the estate but also existing infrastructure, including drainage, roads, and utilities.

As part of their complaint, the homeowners submitted photographic evidence showing ongoing works and presented a petition signed by affected residents opposing the project.

Officials from the Kiambu governor’s office said they were aware of the allegations and were investigating the matter, adding that appropriate action would be taken if violations are established.

However, the contractor linked to the project had not issued any public response at the time of reporting.

The residents have now called for urgent intervention from county authorities, the NCA, and other relevant agencies, urging strict enforcement of planning laws and penalties for any breaches.

They insist swift action is necessary to protect public safety and preserve the integrity of planned residential neighborhoods across Kiambu County.
