People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has warned that President William Ruto’s administration could face serious political instability following the death of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
Speaking during an interview on TV47 on December 23, Karua argued that Raila played a critical role in sustaining the current political balance and that his absence exposes weaknesses within Ruto’s government.
According to Karua, President Ruto relied heavily on Raila’s political influence to maintain national cohesion, adding that without him, the government could struggle to command broad support.
She claimed the President’s future now appears uncertain, even in the short term.
Karua further stated that Raila’s death will significantly impact political calculations ahead of the 2027 General Election, insisting that the President’s political survival has long depended on cooperation with Raila’s ODM party.
She also pointed to internal divisions within ODM over its engagement with the Kenya Kwanza administration, arguing that emerging realignments could work against the President.
Recounting her final interaction with the former Prime Minister, Karua revealed that Raila had expressed discomfort with his political relationship with President Ruto. She disclosed that she had urged him to withdraw his support and allow the government to stand or fall on its own.
“I told him he did not need to give me an immediate answer. I wanted him to reflect on it, and he admitted he was uneasy with the arrangement,” Karua said.
During the interview, Karua accused the President of authoritarian tendencies and criticised the government for what she described as failure to protect citizens detained in neighbouring countries.
She concluded by stating that recent by-elections should serve as a wake-up call for the opposition, insisting that President Ruto is unlikely to secure a second term in office.
