Former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa has come to the defence of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, following a wave of criticism over his absence from the late Raila Odinga’s state funeral in Bondo.
Speaking to the press in Nairobi on Wednesday, Wamalwa urged Kenyans and political leaders to avoid politicizing matters of grief, saying that the mourning period should be a time of unity and reflection rather than blame and division.
“Let us not judge or condemn anyone for how they choose to mourn. The loss of a national leader like Raila Odinga transcends politics and personal differences. What matters is the respect we accord his memory,” Wamalwa stated.
His statement comes amid intense public debate after several leaders — especially from the Mt. Kenya region — skipped Raila’s burial ceremony, sparking speculation that Gachagua’s no-show reflected lingering political tension between him and Raila’s allies.
Wamalwa, however, dismissed those claims, suggesting that the former DP may have had personal or logistical reasons for missing the funeral.
He reminded Kenyans that Raila’s lifelong message was one of unity and reconciliation, values that should continue to guide the nation.
“Raila’s legacy was built on peace and togetherness. Even in his death, we must protect those ideals,” he added.
The former CS also cautioned politicians — both in government and opposition — against using Raila’s death for political mileage, urging the country to embrace a moment of calm reflection and healing.
Several leaders from Western Kenya echoed Wamalwa’s remarks, calling for tolerance and respect during the mourning period.
