Tanzania has been thrown into shock after a well-known Catholic priest was found in critical condition just hours after being abducted by unknown men, allegedly for speaking out against the government.
The disturbing incident has sparked outrage across the country and raised serious concerns over the state of freedom of speech under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration.
According to reports from local media and church officials, the priest was kidnapped on Sunday evening near his parish by unidentified men who arrived in an unmarked vehicle, bundled him in, and sped off before witnesses could intervene.
After hours of frantic searching, the priest was later found dumped in a forest, weak, injured, and barely conscious.
Good Samaritans who found him quickly alerted the authorities and rushed him to a nearby hospital, where doctors confirmed he was in critical condition and receiving emergency care.
Church sources revealed that the priest had recently delivered bold sermons condemning corruption, human rights abuses, and poor governance — remarks believed to have angered powerful figures within the system.
The Catholic Church in Tanzania has strongly condemned the attack, calling it an inhumane and cowardly act aimed at silencing religious voices that speak the truth.
In a firm statement, church leaders demanded a full investigation and protection for all clergy, vowing that the Church “will not be silenced by fear or intimidation.”
