In one of the police stations in Machakos County on Wednesday, drama unfolded after a police officer who was on duty to guard a cell opened fire and began shooting in the air.
According to reports from local media, the incident caused tension within the station as other officers and people nearby ran for safety.
Witnesses said that the officer suddenly became violent while holding his AK-47 rifle. He started firing without any clear reason, causing panic among his colleagues.
“Everyone was scared because we didn’t know what was going on. We just heard gunshots and saw officers running,” said a person who lives near the station.
According to the report, the other police officers quickly ran into hiding to protect themselves from being harmed by their colleague, who appeared completely out of control.
He reportedly shouted and threatened to kill the wives of his fellow officers, who were terrified and hiding inside their homes near the station.
“He kept shouting strange things and looked very disturbed. We could tell something was not right with him,” said another witness.
The situation got worse as the officer continued firing into the air for several minutes. However, his gun eventually ran out of bullets. That is when his fellow officers bravely came out of their hiding places, surrounded him, and managed to arrest him without harming him.
“They acted very fast after realizing the gun had no more bullets,” said one officer who spoke to reporters.
It is suspected that the officer might have been suffering from mental health problems. Police reports indicate that stress and trauma have been affecting many officers across the country.
Authorities have now urged all police officers to seek counseling whenever they feel overwhelmed by pressure or mental challenges.
