On Thursday, as reported by one of the local media houses, a family in Kiambu County is crying for justice after their daughter and her one-year-old baby were insulted and mistreated by police officers.
The heartbreaking incident has left the family in deep pain and anger, especially after the baby lost its life following the ordeal.
According to the report, the matter started several months ago when the woman went to collect a debt from a local businesswoman.
The debtor refused to pay her money and instead called the police officers, accusing the young mother of causing trouble.
Shockingly, when the police arrived, they did not try to listen to her side of the story. Instead, they rushed to arrest her, ignoring the fact that she was carrying her baby on her back.
The woman narrated that when the officers came, they not only arrested her but also insulted her using harsh and demeaning words.
“They did not care that I was holding my child. They just pushed me around and dragged me to the station like a criminal,” she painfully recalled.
Matters became worse when they arrived at the police station. The woman explained that one of the officers slapped her three times as punishment. Sadly, in the process, one of the slaps landed on the baby, who fell off her back and hit the head on the counter.
“I cried and begged them to help my baby, but they just laughed at me and continued abusing me,” the heartbroken mother said.
Instead of rushing the injured baby to the hospital, the police locked both the mother and her child inside the cell. The woman recalled that her baby kept crying in pain through the night but no officer came to their rescue.
Sadly, due to the injuries and lack of medical attention, the child later passed away inside the cell.
“They watched my baby die slowly, and no one cared,” she added in tears.
The family has since made several complaints to the police department, demanding answers and justice. However, their efforts have been ignored.
They also revealed that they tried to contact the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to take up the case, but no meaningful action has been taken to date.
“We feel abandoned. We only want justice for our daughter and our grandchild who died in the hands of people who are supposed to protect us,” the family said.
