Government Reveals Plans to Arrest Certain Leaders Ahead of the November By-Elections

On Wednesday, the government revealed plans to crack down on leaders who are hiring goons to cause mayhem and disrupt peaceful gatherings and meetings.

The Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, said that such actions will not be tolerated as the nation prepares for the November by-elections. According to him, anyone found planning violence will face the full force of the law.

In a statement, CS Murkomen assured Kenyans that starting next month, these leaders will be held accountable, and there will be no mercy.

“We will not allow anyone to use violence to influence political outcomes. Those caught will be arrested and charged, no matter how powerful they think they are,” he said.

He added that the leaders are committing these crimes purely because of politics. With the by-elections approaching, some leaders are desperate to win at any cost.

“It is unfortunate that politics has driven some leaders to hire criminals to intimidate voters and disturb campaigns. Before the election period begins in November, many of these individuals will already be behind bars,” Murkomen said.

CS Murkomen also emphasized that it’s not only the leaders who will face consequences. The people being used as goons, who are often paid small amounts ranging from 200 to 500 shillings to cause trouble, will also be detained and charged in court.

“Those who are being used to commit crimes are not innocent. They too will face justice for their actions,” he warned, stressing the need for everyone to act responsibly.

The leaders under government watch include governors and Members of Parliament. According to Murkomen, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is on standby to begin the operation.

“We are monitoring all those who have a history of using violence for political gain. Our security teams are ready, and no one will escape accountability,” he stated.

As the by-elections draw closer, the government is determined to ensure that political campaigns remain peaceful and voters can exercise their rights without fear.
