Tension gripped the Bungoma Law Courts on Tuesday after a Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officer’s firearm accidentally went off during a court session, leaving two officers and three civilians injured.
According to Judiciary spokesperson Paul Ndemo, the incident occurred around 10:50 a.m. while a criminal case was being heard in the High Court. He confirmed that the injured included the DCI officer himself, a Kenya Prisons officer, and three members of the public.
The five were immediately rushed to Bungoma Referral Hospital, where they are currently receiving treatment. Ndemo assured that all the victims are in stable condition and that no life-threatening injuries were reported.
Court officials and other members of the public who were present during the hearing escaped unhurt. Ndemo further urged calm, saying there was no need for panic as security teams had taken control of the situation.
Bungoma County Police Commander Anderson Njagi announced that investigations have begun to establish the exact cause of the firearm discharge. He emphasized that security agencies would put in place measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The DCI also released a statement indicating that steps will be taken to ensure accountability and to address any security lapses that may have contributed to the mishap.
