Ruto Greenlights Renaming of Talanta Stadium to Honour Raila Odinga

President William Ruto has approved the renaming of the under-construction Talanta Stadium to Raila Odinga International Stadium, in a tribute to the late former Prime Minister.

The proposal gained traction during the 62nd Jamhuri Day celebrations at Nyayo National Stadium, where Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja publicly urged the President to consider naming the new arena after Raila Odinga—a request that was met with enthusiastic approval from the crowd.

Responding to Sakaja, President Ruto acknowledged the public’s call and pledged to honour it.
“You have said that we should rename it to Raila Amolo Odinga International Stadium. I have heard you, and as soon as we are done, we will do that,” he said, prompting cheers from attendees.

How the Renaming Will Be Implemented

The official renaming process begins with a formal proposal, such as the one submitted by Governor Sakaja. This proposal will be reviewed by relevant government ministries—including Sports, Lands, and Public Works—before being forwarded to the Cabinet or President for approval.

Following presidential approval, public consultations and stakeholder engagement will take place to gather feedback and address concerns. Legal compliance checks will ensure the renaming adheres to existing laws governing public assets, heritage sites, and national monuments, while also reviewing project contracts to prevent conflicts.

Once cleared, the renaming will be formalised through a gazette notice, making it official. The implementation will include updating stadium signage, maps, tickets, and digital records, potentially culminating in a ceremonial unveiling attended by the President and key stakeholders.

The Talanta Stadium, still under construction, is set to become one of Nairobi’s premier sporting venues, and its renaming is viewed as a lasting tribute to Raila Odinga’s legacy in Kenya’s political and civic life.
