Wajir County is inching closer to establishing its first fully fledged university after a high-level consultative meeting signaled renewed commitment to the long-awaited project.
The meeting, chaired by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba, brought together Eldas MP Adan Keynan, Wajir West MP Yussuf Farah, and members of the board of trustees behind the proposed Wajir Peace University.
Speaking after the discussions, MP Keynan affirmed that leaders from the region were fully united behind efforts to speed up the university’s creation.
He said the institution would be a game changer, offering young people from Northern Kenya the skills, exposure and modern competencies required to compete locally and internationally.
Keynan added that the proposed university is expected to become a crucial centre for peacebuilding, research, innovation, and professional training—areas that will strengthen the region’s human capital and long-term development.
He noted that beyond classroom learning, the institution is envisioned to shape a new generation of peace experts, engineers, educators, researchers and innovators who will drive change and bring solutions to challenges facing the pastoralist communities.
Wajir West MP echoed these sentiments, highlighting the overwhelming support from residents, community elders, and regional leaders who view the university as a timely and transformative investment in education and stability.
The leaders expressed confidence that the strong collaboration and shared vision among stakeholders would fast-track the establishment of Wajir Peace University, marking a historic step for Northern Kenya.
CS Ogamba reassured the public that the government remains committed to expanding access to quality higher education across the country. He said the proposed university aligns with national efforts to improve learning opportunities and empower marginalized regions.
If completed, Wajir Peace University will not only open doors for higher learning but also act as a centre for research, conflict resolution, and innovation—critical pillars for the region’s long-term peace and growth.
